Australians vote or receive fine

Concern over the light turnout in our recent primary election brought to mind something I read about voting down under in Australia:

You vote or you have a doctor's notification that you were too ill to get out to vote. The alternative to voting is a stiff fine for not doing so.

In the presidential election, my grandfather's cousin, James Gillespie Blaine, a Republican and former governor of Maine, as well as secretary of state under two presidents, lost by 23,005 votes to Grover Cleveland, 4,874,986 to 4,851,981. That is two-tenths of a percent!
