Despite a grandiose personality and glittering vocals that skate from a warm crescendo to a cool murmur, Solomon Burke has always sung from the fringes of soul music. During the 1960s, Burke had hits such as "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" and "Cry to Me," but he never crossed over like he did with last year's "Don't Give Up on Me."
