Q. My father received this "magic lantern" when he was 8 years old (1897) from his father and passed it on to me when I was 8 years old (1939). It was made in Germany in 1866. I would like to know its worth today. - Thomas Cooney, Erie, Pa.

A. The magic lantern was the precursor to both the slide projector and the movie projector. Its origin is frequently traced to 17th- century Europe.

The technology of the magic lantern was simple. A beam of light was projected against a wall or screen after first being directed through a glass slide containing a hand-drawn or photographic image.
