Prisons chief Velasco quits Ex-jail head facing heat resigns only 38 days into new post

Gov. Blagojevich sought to end one of his fledgling administration's more embarrassing episodes Friday, accepting the resignation of Ernesto Velasco just 38 days after he was appointed to run the state prisons.

Originally touted as an American success story, Velasco quickly became a lightning rod for negative publicity about his tenure as executive director of Cook County Jail--from allegations of a conflict of interest to questions about his handling of prisoners' claims they suffered brutality at the hands of guards.
