Both Coleman Hawkins and Etta Cox have had their greatest musical success after leaving their native St. Joseph. But unlike Hawkins, Cox made a contribution to local history while still living here.

Cox, then known as Etta Green, was just 14 years old back in 1962, when she took the stage at Krug Park Bowl with the St. Joseph Symphony, becoming the first black person to perform there. It's a musical memory that she still holds among her most cherished.
