Coleman Hawkins to have Downtown park named after him at Sunday ceremony

Ever since he moved away from St. Joseph as a teen-ager, legendary
jazz saxophonist Coleman Hawkins hasn't had a place in town to call
home. Now, 33 years after his death, he does.
The park at Felix Street Square will be dedicated as Coleman
Hawkins Park at a ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24. News-
Press columnist Alonzo Weston, who has campaigned for the name
change, says it's entirely fitting for an artist of Hawkins' stature.
