Modern Freemasonry traces its origins to the Middle Ages, when traveling members of the stonemasons guild developed secret handshakes and codes to recognize each other in the days before union cards existed. Over time, non-masons were allowed to join and called Freemasons.

Tools of the stonemason, such as the square, compass and level, became symbols of the upright lives Masons were expected to lead. Their slogan today: "We take good men and make them better."
