Chicago: America's music city that works

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--We all know that Chicago helped give birth to jazz in the 1920s and '30s. And we've long taken pride in the city's role in developing the electric urban blues in the '40s, '50s and '60s.

But there's ample evidence that Chicago's days as a musical incubator are far from over.

A few weeks ago I moderated a panel at the Americana Music Association meeting here with the provocative title: "Where Does the Country Come From? New Centers of Roots Music--Chicago."
