Matthew Flinders the explorer travelled the world, eventually mapping and naming Australia.

But there was another Matthew Flinders who travelled Lincolnshire giving surgical, medical and "man midwife" treatment to people.

Whereas Matthew Junior would immortalise the contours of a new continent, his father Matthew was content to document daily life in a diary and accounts book.

This was an era in which a trip from Donington to Boston or Spalding was something to write home about.
