There was a time when an Evanston-Mount Carmel football game would have been a high school version of Michigan-Ohio State or Nebraska- Oklahoma. So I showed up at Gately Stadium last Thursday night to observe the first matchup of two of the most storied programs in Illinois.

Murney Lazier was the best high school football coach I covered in 40 years. In 18 seasons at Evanston, from 1957 to 1974, he posted a 127-15-4 record. Imagine, more years than losses.
