Interjection of rare works makes for fanciful evening

Grant Park Orchestra
At first glance, most conductors have repertoires of wide-ranging
scope. They are conducting Mozart one night and Mahler the next.
Generalists who are comfortable with Beethoven and Bernstein seem to
be the norm.
But some conductors also develop personal affinities, finding
themselves drawn to a certain composer or school of composition,
often for inexplicable reasons. The Grant Park Orchestra is lucky to
have in residence two conductors with strong musical affinities.
Principal conductor Carlos Kalmar, born in Uruguay and reared in
