Peter Lely was a portrait painter who became Principal Painter to
King Charles II.
Born of Dutch parents, he trained in Haarlem and came to London in
the 1640s, where he quickly established a reputation as a
portraitist.
His early English paintings were influenced by Van Dyck and Dutch
baroque style and were mainly mythological scenes and portraits set
in landscapes, often pastoral in mood, for which he became famous. He
quickly established himself as a portraitist to King Charles I, but
by swiftly changing his patrons, his reputation and fortune grew
