Old master sale could show city to be sitting on true king's ransom

The forthcoming sale of an Old Master painting of a Stuart monarch's young mistress could reveal Exeter to be sitting on a small fortune.

The painting - of King Charles II's lady love, the former fruit seller Nell Gwyn - is being sold to save Chiddingstone Castle in Kent, home of the late prolific art collector Den- ys Bower, and is expected to fetch pounds2m when it comes up for auction next month. It was painted by Old Master Sir Peter Lely - and lucky Exeter owns no fewer than two of his paintings.
