Italian neo-realism revisited in Visconti's restored 'Rocco'
|
The revival of Luchino Visconti's "Rocco and His Brothers" (1960),
now in a restored print, brings back a film much mentioned but seldom
seen. It begins a weeklong engagement today at the Gene Siskel Film
Center of the Art Institute.
The postwar Italian cinema swam in the strong current of neo-
realism, and Visconti, an aristocrat who embraced Marxism, swam
along. Great films made soon after the war, like "Shoeshine," "The
Bicycle Thief" and "Open City," celebrated a cinema in which real
people played characters much like themselves, on actual locations,
in stories about everyday hardship. ...
