Children's book critic, writer Sutherland dies

Back in 1963, a shocking new juvenile book by a little-known artist, Maurice Sendak, set the children's book world on its ear. Where the Wild Things Are, a dark yet witty description of a youthful temper tantrum, offended many genteel critics who believed children's books should be all sweetness and light.

One reviewer was delighted. "Most imaginative and unusual," she called the book, and seven years later she went on to laud another landmark Sendak work, In the Night Kitchen, despite its little hero's full frontal nudity, as "an engaging fantasy."
