Coroners in favour of changes to law
|
Nelson coroner Ian Smith is keen to become a fulltime coroner
under proposed law changes, but has concerns about plans to axe the
roles of the country's existing coroners.
There are 54 mostly part-time coroners in New Zealand, who
investigate unexpected or unusual deaths.
Under the Coroners Bill before Parliament, which will replace the
1988 Coroners Act, the roles of existing coroners will be
"disestablished'' and those who are eligible will have to reapply for
about 20 fulltime positions.
Mr Smith said he would like to reapply for a fulltime coroner's
position.
