War and remembrance Memorials large and small pay tribute to heroes here

The memorials range from plaques on Bridgeport street corners listing guys from the neighborhood, to statues of Civil War heroes, to monuments respecting the dead of all American wars.

"War memorials are for the living rather than the dead," says James Mayo, a University of Kansas architecture professor and author of the book War Memorials as Political Landscape. "They say a lot about what we want to remember."

And so we erect more memorials to "good" wars such as the Revolutionary War and World Wars I and II than to conflicts where our motives were questionable, such as the Spanish-American ...
