Scallop forecast poor

A grim season is being forecast for the Nelson region's scallop industry following the release of the annual scallop bed survey results.

Challenger Scallop Enhancement Company chief executive Russell Mincher said shellfish numbers were significantly down this year, particularly in Golden Bay.

Mr Mincher said there were also concerns about the quality and weight of the scallop meat, which dictated fortunes on the lucrative French export market.
