Scallops bring in $60m

Commercial scallop fishermen in the Nelson region are celebrating a bumper season which has pumped an estimated $60 million into the local economy.

The 60-strong fleet of scallop boats finished fishing last week, after harvesting 716 tonnes of scallop meat -- about 56 million scallops.

It is the biggest harvest in about seven years.

It is more than double last year's harvest, which was hampered by a lack of good-sized scallops.
