THE controversial not proven verdict is back in the headlines - and one MSP hopes it will finally be done away with.

Labour backbencher Michael McMahon believes the verdict, which is unique to Scottish criminal law, is illogical, out of time, and "just plain wrong".

"I know it's a contentious issue but it is time for us to reconsider it, " he said.

"There have been too many occasions on which victims and their families have been left aggrieved at a not proven outcome.
