Antiques can be scary.

"I think people are often intimidated by antiques," said Frances MacDougall, managing editor of Southern Accents magazine. "They're intimidated about the process of buying them, afraid they're going to be taken."

People who finally do buy antiques often are wary of actually using them in their home because they cost so much or are so old, she said in a telephone interview.
