1 How it all began

AMONG the supporters who attended the first Scotland v England game at Hamilton Crescent in 1872 were a group of soldiers from the Third Lanark Rifle Volunteers.

Although the match finished 0-0, they were so enamoured with the spectacle and the sport that they started proceedings to form their own army team that very night.

It was formally registered with the football authorities of the day - that would have been the English FA, as the SFA had yet to be founded - two weeks later on December 12. Their first game was against Clydes- dale in May, 1873. It finished 0-0.
