THERE are days when we think the rain will never stop and when it doesn't seem too fanciful to conjure up a Glasgow swamped by water.

It's a fantastic image but don't consider trying to use it for a book - former primary teacher turned children's writer Julie Bertagna has got there first.

Her novel, Exodus, which is a hit with adults as well as teenage readers, has been nominated for the children's section of the prestigious Whitbread prize, which is to be announced on Wednesday.

If she wins, Julie will go forward to be considered for the overall prize, to be announced on January 28, which ...
