Pilgrim's progress slows down in Suffolk

Bury St Edmunds, England's best loved market town, is ideal for a relaxing break.

Originally a popular site of pilgrimage, travellers came to worship at the shrine of the martyred Edmund, Saxon boy King of East Anglia, the first patron saint of England.

Since then, this Suffolk town has passed from place of pilgrimage to tourist centre.

I stayed at The Angel, a historic coaching inn dating back to 1452. It has welcomed royalty, artists, writers - and of course pilgrims - for more than 400 years.
