Zen Buddhism is a branch of Buddhism that emphasizes understanding reality through intuition and sudden insight rather than conscious thought.

The practice originated in China as a mix of Mahayana Buddhism and Taoism. It later spread to Korea, Japan and the Western world.

Zen focuses on self-knowledge and on moving beyond the restrictions of the conscious mind.
