A heart defect aggravated by the July heat appears responsible for the death of 16-year-old Ryan Owens, a lineman on the Henderson County High School football team who collapsed and died shortly after an early season practice.

Owens, who died after a morning practice July 19, suffered from mitral valve prolapse, a pre-existing condition which led to sudden cardiac arrhythmia.
