The temperature was 15 degrees with a wind chill well below zero,
but to Leland Gibson, Dec. 16, 1944, was "hotter than hell."
That was because of the machine gun fire and 88mm shells from the
German armies and tanks rushing forward in the Battle of the Bulge.
It was the first combat experience for Gibson, who was born in
Wadesville, Ind., and was farming when drafted into the Army at the
end of 1942. Now 82, he lives in Evansville.
During World War II, he was with C Company of the 811th Tank
Destroyer Battalion.
Now six decades later, he laments that nobody knows what tank
