Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott returns to the center of power, besting Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander to win the minority whip spot. This is the guy who stepped down in 2002 as Republican majority leader after making what some called racially insensitive remarks: "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president [as a staunch segregationist], we voted for him. We're proud of it," Lott said. "And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."
