Slow down for serenity at Hotel Alex in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. -- I wasn't the first Chicagoan to try to slow down in Rapid City. The open-road serenity of South Dakota has been my favorite road trip of 2006 thus far, and it concluded at the historic Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City.

The 143-room hotel is named after Alex Carlton Johnson, the Chicago & North Western Railway vice president who built the palace as a tribute to Sioux Indian culture. Hotel construction began in 1927, the day before work began on nearby Mount Rushmore.

Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel opened on July 1, 1928. Before long, Crazy ...
