Measures: More failing than passing

Voters Tuesday night seemed more inclined to dish out money for new classrooms than to support park improvements or housing developments in quarries.

Early results showed San Mateo Union High School District's Measure M, which asks for a whopping $298 million for school improvements, was cruising toward a victory despite the district's recent unexpected budget woes. Just a month before the election, the district had to lay off teachers and other employees after discovering it wasn't going to receive money it had anticipated. This made some in the community leery about supporting the measure.
