SARASOTA, Fla. - Sandy and Bob Ludwig feared a bioterror attack
the first time their eyes and throats began burning on Siesta Key
five years ago.
Like most people along Florida's Gulf Coast, the Pennsylvania
couple now understand that the source of their symptoms was an
outbreak of red tide, known for killing fish and marine mammals in
vast numbers. The algae produce a toxin that, when churned by waves,
can be carried on the wind and affect people as far as 1 1/2 miles
inland.
