Pentecost accents Jewish roots

Pentecost often is seen as the birthday of the church. But that may be an anachronistic view and one more example of the way many of us who are Christian misunderstand or devalue our deep Jewish roots.

Pentecost commemorates the day 50 days after Jesus' resurrection when Christians believe the Apostles received the gift of the Holy Spirit in a definitive way. But Jesus' followers didn't finally separate from Judaism until many decades later.

And the church didn't invent the term...
