He was the William Hogarth of the 19th century and so popular a painter that the Royal Academy was forced to erect rails around his works to hold back the admiring crowds.

But the reputation of William Powell Frith faded even before his death in 1909, and until now there had been no exhibition of his paintings in Britain for 55 years. Organisers of a new show that opens at the Guildhall Art Gallery in London on Monday hope that it will provide a chance to reassess an artist whose works are a valuable record of life in Victorian England.
