Here's a rundown of some of the multiple Supreme Court vacancies:
* 1971: Justice Hugo Black stepped down on Sept. 17 and Justice
John Marshall Harlan retired on Sept. 23. Lewis Powell replaced Black
and William H. Rehnquist took Harlan's seat on Jan. 7, 1972.
* 1941: Justice James Clark McReynolds retired on Jan. 31 and was
replaced by James Byrnes on July 8. Chief Justice Charles Evan Hughes
retired June 30 and was succeeded by Justice Harlan Fiske Stone on
July 3. Stone was replaced by Robert Jackson on July 11.
* 1922: Justice John Clarke resigned on Sept. 18 and was replaced
