Mining companies will pay 10 percent more in fines for safety violations, under a rule change announced Tuesday by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.

MSHA said it would increase the maximum civil penalties from $55,000 per violation to $60,000.

Agency officials said the change complies with a congressional mandate that agencies periodically increase civil penalties to account for inflation.

In November, the General Accounting Office had issued a report that said MSHA was nearly six months behind in making the required adjustments.
