Joseph V. Rivera, 82, a retired cartographer, died Sept. 8 at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital in Baltimore. He developed pneumonia after heart bypass surgery and a heart valve replacement. He was a former Silver Spring resident and lived in Westminster, Md.

Mr. Rivera was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and grew up in New York City. He served in the Navy during World War II and moved to the Washington area in 1950 to work for the Army Map Service. He later worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forestry Service as a photogrammetric cartographer. He retired in 1985.
