What's cool at school? Culinary arts Hundreds turned down for cooking class.

Junior Kelsie Shearrer scraped tiny shreds of onion off her chef's knife before turning the blade on a leafy stalk of celery - essential ingredients in Macque Choux.

The Cajun corn recipe was on Wednesday's menu in Brook Harlan's culinary arts class at Rock Bridge High School. Even with a pinch of parsley, minced garlic and chopped peppers, the dish might not be as hot as the class itself.

About 200 students are taking Columbia Area Career Center culinary arts classes at both major high schools this year. The center had to turn away nearly 300 students because of limited staff and space.
