Corn dethrones wheat as king in Kansas fields

CLYDE, Kan. - Kansas might remain the country's breadbasket, but
now corn is king.
For reasons ranging from the Atkins diet to gasoline prices, from
soda consumption to plant genetics, the turn of the 21st century saw
corn surpass wheat production in the state that still grows more of
the raw material for bread and pasta than any other.
"It's simple economics," said Don Garlow, a part-time banker and
full-time farmer.
On the 2,500 acres he farms with his son-in-law in the central
Kansas flatlands of Cloud County, there's a constant calculation of
