Drug addict labelled `pond scum' for charity theft

A Stoke man who stole charity donation boxes containing hundreds
of dollars to fund his drug habit has been sentenced to nine months
in jail and likened to "pond scum'' by a judge.
Jason Peter Rochford, 22, appeared in the Nelson District Court
yesterday and admitted seven charges of stealing donation tins from
businesses in Nelson between November 3 and December 7.
Sergeant Wayne Johnston said Rochford stole donation tins
belonging to the Nelson Region Hospice Trust, the Nelson Marlborough
Rescue Helicopter Trust, and Cody Walsh - a Nelson teenager
