Williamsburg Builds a Foundation; Turning an 18th-Century World Into a 20th-Century Business

For most of the first half century of Colonial Williamsburg's
existence, raising funds for its reconstitution of 18th-century life
was no problem.
"At the end of the year, a report on this place and the operating
deficit was given to John D. Rockefeller Jr.," Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation President Charles R. Longsworth said in a recent
interview, "and he wrote a check." Rockefeller had begun the
reconstruction of Colonial Williamsburg in 1926 and gave $60 million
to endow it.
But Rockefeller died in 1960 and, within a few years, Colonial
Williamsburg's 18th-century world began ...
