The Klaus Barbie Trial

AS A GERMAN officer, Klaus Barbie ran the Gestapo in Lyons in
occupied France during World War II. In 1951 he fled to Bolivia.
Soon after that, a French court convicted him (twice) in his absence
for war crimes and pronounced a death sentence. In 1983 a democratic
government came to power in Bolivia and returned him to France. A
statute of limitations had voided his first conviction and sentence,
but now he has gone on trial a second time, in Lyons, for crimes
against humanity in a different set of atrocities involving the
execution, torture and deportation of Jewish civilians and resistance ...
