Old Favorites Anew, at NMAA

SOME OLD FRIENDS are back in town. The National Museum of
American Art has just reinstalled 81 masterworks that spent the past
year on tour, and seeing them again is like a family reunion.
Going through the galleries generates one little shock of
re-recognition after another, and the delight deepens as the
refreshed eye is reminded of what had become blurred by familiarity.
The Gilbert Stuart portrait of John Adams rising 88, taken at a
glance, shows a sour old man wearing half a sneer. After a few
moments of study, it yields a sense of something deeper. Here's a
