Kitt Peak's `Long Eyes' Of Science; Astronomers Flock To Arizona Citadel

It was long past midnight when Sam Barden found what he was
looking for. For three hours, the 29-year-old astronomer had been
hunched over a couple of computers, rummaging through data collected
by a four-meter telescope.
The instrument was pointed through a dark slit in the observatory
dome, fixed on an exploding star, or nova, known as BT Mon. The star
was 6,000 light years away and first discovered in 1939, but no one
had been able to detect fully the faint cloud of gases that surround
it.
