Vatican Letter Appeals for Funds to Battle Rising Deficit;Critics Say Request for Aid, Addressed to Bishops, Reveals Too Little About True State of Church's Finances

Alarmed by the prospects of an ever-widening budget deficit, the Vatican has sent letters to each of its 3,000 bishops soliciting new funds to help the church's administration get out of the red, according to Vatican officials here.

The letters, now en route to every part of the globe, contain a grim, if still limited, balance sheet of the church's administrative finances and urge the bishops to make greater contributions to raising new funds.
