Massachusetts Workers' Compensation Benefits Decline Relative To Wages; NASI Study Finds Recession Affects National Trends

WASHINGTON, July 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In Massachusetts, workers' compensation benefits decreased to $763.8 million in 2001, a decline of 7.8 percent from the 2000 level of $828.2 million, according to a new report released by the National Academy of Social Insurance (see Figure 1). Workers' compensation pays for medical care and cash benefits for workers who are injured on the job or become ill due to job-related causes.

The number of workers in Massachusetts covered by the program rose by 0.1 percent in 2001. Their total wages rose by 1.5 percent. Benefits paid for every $100 of wages ...
