SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Forty years ago on March 18, 1963 the United States Supreme Court held in a landmark decision that any person facing imprisonment, rich or poor, had the right to counsel. Clarence Earl Gideon, a poor Florida prison inmate, tried, convicted and sentenced to five years in prison for a burglary, all without a lawyer, sent the Supreme Court a handwritten petition asking for a lawyer and revolutionized America's understanding of the right to counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
