Orphaned at seven, when her parents died of influenza within a day of each other, she spent five unhappy years with a miserly, abusive pair of guardians before her maternal grandparents came to her rescue. They took her into their Seattle household, where she was cared for handsomely if a bit rigidly until she went off to Vassar.
