If racial power-sharing ever comes to South Africa, it will be a long time finding its way to Lichtenburg.

Deep in the western Transvaal high veld, where Afrikaner farmers tend their crops of mealie, or corn, with a wary eye aimed at reform-minded leaders in Pretoria, the apartheid dream of the late prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd is as undisturbed as the endless rows of sturdy cornstalks on a windless evening.
