The Immune System Reacts to Stress; Studies Look at Job Changes, Radiation Fears

People who lose their jobs seem to lose something more as well: some of their immune system's ability to fight disease. A new study, reported last week at the Society of Behavioral Medicine annual meeting here, found that men and women who lost their jobs also lost for a short period of time some of their body's ability to battle infection.

The study involved 24 people, ages 30 to 60, recruited from unemployment offices in Maryland. Blood tests showed that their immune systems had lower numbers of white blood cells, known as T- and B-lymphocytes, which are important in fighting ...
