Wandering the halls of the Paul Klee retrospective at the Museum
of Modern Art is like poring through a crowded chest of old, beloved
toys.
Here are building blocks of color, and twirling things, and
masks. And souvenirs from far away-suns and moons and sailing ships.
The images are mostly small, and magical and intricate. The viewer
feels enormous. Here are fish that sing, and flying plants, and cats
that prance on tightropes. Death is present, too. The paintings of
Klee's final years, echoes of the Nazi time, sing of his mortality.
